For years, one of the most frustrating emails I’ve gotten is someone asking for a recommendation for a marriage book. And I haven’t had anything I love to give them.
The simple fact is that the vast majority of evangelical marriage resources are built on faulty premises (gender roles and hierarchy; marriage permanence being the main point rather than health and safety), and that leads to really toxic advice and outcomes.
And people are hurting.
But couples, especially pre-marital couples, often do want something to work through together.
I’ve found myself recommending some secular resources that I at least know won’t harm.
So we decided to do something about it.
We decided to branch out from just writing about sex, and tackle marriage. Last year, we ran that matched pair survey (thank you to everyone who took it!), and got even MORE data than ever before.
And Keith and I, together with Joanna, wrote The Marriage You Want.
It’s got MORE charts than ever before (and they’re super fun). A lot of the results will surprise you!
But it’s more like The Good Girl’s Guide to Great Sex than it is like The Great Sex Rescue.
Our goal in this book was not to tear toxic teachings down, but rather show people what it would look like to write a healthy book from the ground up. What is it that God wants for us?
And we based it on the BARE Marriage acronym:
It’s a marriage based on:
- Balance
- Affection (and Sex!)
- Responsibility
- Emotional Connection
You see that word Responsibility? You’re going to love that, because we talk a TON about mental load. You would not believe how much mental load discrepancies affect marriages. We were really shocked at the data on that. And yet how many books even mention this at all?
Last night, I put up some social media posts announcing the pre-order.
And look what happened! We hit above 1000 on Amazon rankings (that is just INCREDIBLE). And we’re already #3 in Christian marriage (and the #1 new release)!

Why it helps authors when you pre-order
When you pre-order, it tells Amazon or other retailers, “Hey, there’s a lot of interest in this book, so you better buy a bunch of them.”
Other retailers see that this book is getting buzz, so they stock it. And retailers like Chapters/Indigo and Barnes and Noble, that have online as well as physical stores, are more likely to stock it in their physical store if it sells well online.
In addition, Amazon and other retailers often lower the price when there’s a lot of interest to bring the buzz even more–so you’ll get a lower price!
When you order early, you’re guaranteed the lowest price (because you’re charged when it sells).

We’re so excited for this book. We feel like we learned so much on the surveys for The Great Sex Rescue and She Deserves Better, and it was like we had a well-oiled machine when writing this one.

This is probably the single thing on this site that has helped me the most. It’s amazing how unbalanced this can be, and it’s also interesting that keeping track of tasks can often be more difficult and stressful than actually doing the tasks.
It’s amazing how much this impacted marital satisfaction stats. It was huge!
